(djeggnog, I wanted to thank you for your thorough response, you sound sincere. I didn't want you to think that all that effort you put into it wasn't appreciated.)
I'm still trying to make my way through all the replies, I do appreciate them!
i wanted my jw friend's perspective on something, so i asked them this question:.
if i read a passage of scripture and conclude about it something that opposes the wt's view of the same passage, in your mind who has the truth about that passage (i.e.
who is correct)?

AnneB,
You also said,
Pharmer (Farmer), eh? Whatcha cultivatin'? Is this not a ploy to get people to "examine their faith"?
There is no ploy. It was an honest question with the hopes of understanding my friends approach and view of things. My friend wants me to be open to examining anything, while remaining objective, open-minded, and eliminating as much bias as possible. I would like to be held accountable to that end. It’s not a matter of win/lose¸ but rather one of facts.
The name “Pharmer” seems to bother you somehow; let me share the "secret" with you so as to dispel potential assumptions.
I grew up and was raised on a farm in ND. My career is one as a pharmacist.
Let me know if there are any other personal issues of mine that bother you.

AnneB,
I see your point, however, your assumption is incorrect. Although I don’t have the time to address every issue like this, perhaps by me clearing up your misconception I will be preventing further ones. I in fact did say exactly what I wanted, and I was open about it.
If you look at my initial post, I explain why I’ve posted this question. Because I had asked my friend a question that I had assumed was easy, after having not heard from them it dawned on me that maybe it wasn’t such an easy question after all. I thought it was easy, but perhaps they didn’t. It was natural for me to approach the topic line in a “Is it not…” sort of way (having thought it was an easy question).
It is not a case of wanting someone to agree (or disagree for that matter), I assure you. In fact, if it is not an easy question, I want to be shown how it is not, from a JW perspective. Notice how I am welcoming the comments that tell me that it is not an easy question. I only want a truthful, honest answer.

Thanks Steve2, I appreciate what you've said. I'll try to explain briefly. My friend not only has their beliefs (that part I can accept), but they have also made several bold claims to me (which I cannot acccept without examining the evidence, and part of examining the evidence will involve asking questions). Make sense?
OTWO (and others too) thanks so much for the input!

(btw tec, I'm not in. My JW friend wants me to examine things (esp. with my own beliefs) and to study with someone locally. I also have a Mormon friend who claims they are the True Church. Needless to say, my hands are full with examining my current beliefs, Mormonism, and WTBTS. Although I believe examining one's own beliefs is a continual and important process, I also realize that even if I find one of my current beliefs to be in err, it does not prove someone else's belief is true. In the end, I only want to hold on to what stands the tests. I'm open to being proven wrong about anything...I just wish it was easier to get straight-forward answers from people so this process of examining could be quicker.)
kjw53, I know it's easy to read the wrong tone into things that are typed, and I certainly don't want to offend. So to be clear, did you find my question somehow offensive (or is that just me reading the wrong tone into your 1st response)?
Thanks again.

kjw53 (a JW?), you said:
The JW leaders would be right.
I observe how you were able to say who was right without actually knowing the content. Apart from your false assumptions regarding me (i.e. -don't make this something it isn't), thank you for your straight-forward answer.
I do have a specific question for you kjw53. If I read a passage of scripture and then conclude about it the same as the WT concludes, who then is correct?
Thanks again (for everyone's input) -- very helpful!

Hmmm, I don't mean it to be a trick question though. I thought I could get a straight-forward and honest answer from them. It was via email, and I don't think there was any condescending tone. The whole email was this:
I want you to help me understand your view about something.
If I read a passage of scripture and conclude about it something that opposes the WT's view of the same passage, in your mind who has the truth about that passage (i.e. who is correct)?
Any additional thoughts?
(I appreciate all these comments!)

Thanks OnTheWayOut. Notice though, the question I asked this person does not require them to give me their opinion aout the passage of scripture (...that opposes the WT's view of the same passage...).
So, with that in mind, do you think this is a difficult question for them to answer?
(I'm not trying to be difficult here, I just am surprised that it remains unanswered after 2 weeks.)

Zeroday, I understand that. So are you saying this is a difficult question for a JW to answer?

I thought this would have been an easy question for my friend to answer, but for whatever reason, two weeks have passed and it still remains unanswered (not even acknowledged).
Can I get some feedback from some of you (realizing many of you are xJW) as to whether or not this would be an easy question to answer as a JW?
I really don't mean it to be a deep question; take it for what it is asking.
Thanks,
Pharmer
